Prepare for your I.T. certification exam

Staff report

When you’re preparing for your I.T. certification test, consider these nine tips from testing and assessment provider Prometric:

1. Research the test before you register.

It’s important to know the prerequisites for every test because registering for an exam you’re not qualified to take can be a waste of time and money. Visit the test provider’s Web site for a list of requirements, and while you’re there, look around for more information, such as profiles of successful test-takers, to further ensure you’re registering for the test that’s right for you.

2. Gather study guides.

Reference guides and other study materials recommended by the certifying organization can help you asses you strengths and weaknesses and provide a good idea of what will be covered on the test.

3. Start studying early.

Don’t procrastinate. Once you’ve gathered the guides, start studying so you’ll have plenty of time to catch up on topics you’re having trouble with.

4. Look for study groups.

Studying with others may provide helpful insights, and organized courses will offer structured study plans.

5. Take a test drive.

Drive to the testing center on a day prior to the exam to be certain you won’t encounter unexpected obstacles on test day.

6. Try out the testing center’s computers.

Check with your testing center to find out if there is a designated time for test-takers to sit down at a computer for a sense of what test day will be like. You won’t get to see any content of your actual test, but it could help you get a feel for the “test center experience.”

7. Double-check all test-day details.

Verify the time, date and location of your exam.

8. Assemble documentation.

Make sure you know precisely what documents you’ll need to check in for the test. Usual requirements include identification and appointment confirmation e-mails.

9. Get plenty of rest.

Make sure you get a good night’s sleep the night before your exam so that you arrive rested and ready to take the test.
