PREGNANCY HURTS READINESS

This is not about judging peoples’ motives; it’s about setting standards. We have rules and regulations that govern our actions. This is about readiness. This is about combat performance. If I, as a father, want to be home more with my kids, I have two options — move to a non-deployable billet or get out. For me to occupy a deployable slot, where people count on me, and yet not be a ready asset is a disservice to those around me.

LT. LEADERSHIP COURSE

There is too much variation in the different ROTC programs. They need to make the Leadership Development and Assessment Course harder and actually send people home, not just pass people through.

ILLEGAL TO THREATEN SOLDIERS

This might be necessary if the level of threat were so high as to make people not join the military out of fear for their families [“Threatening troops may become a felony in South Carolina”]. In some cases, laws like this do make sense because the crime is intended to instill fear in a group of people and therefore is a crime against an entire group of people, not merely the victim. I just don’t think we have that problem and can’t foresee us having it.

Nice gesture but how realistic is this? There are already laws on the books against threatening acts, gestures, words.

MOM WANTS BURIAL WITH SON

Those graves are designated for those who have served and as painful as it may be, you cannot have every grief-stricken mother wanting to be buried beside her loved one.
