ANOTHER POSTHUMOUS MOH
Sgt. 1st Class Jared Monti deserves this honor [“Generous in life and death,” Aug. 3]. He earned it. I’m not taking away from the service of this soldier, however, this seems to reaffirm the notion that these days the only way to earn the Medal of Honor [is] you have to die. Why are there no living MoH recipients from the current conflict? Congress, what’s the deal?
— BadBender
I think they give the Medal of Honor quickly to the dead, for a grieving process for the families. “Johnny died doing his job. Here is the MoH for sacrificing his life for the war that never ends.” Later on there will be living MoH winners, but there is just no rush for them.

LOCKED IN THE BARRACKS
[B]eing a single soldier who has direct experience with this perceived over-regulating [in the barracks] I would like to state my piece.
I enlisted in the Army at 27 with a bachelor’s degree in hand. I fully expected that during Basic and Advanced Individual Training I would be restricted, and I tolerated it. I learned and grew, improved my physical conditioning greatly and graduated to my first unit. Then the problems started.
I moved into the barracks and almost immediately the ludicrous micromanaging began. I have to lock my high-dollar items inside the provided furniture, inside my already locked room?
I can’t socialize outside my room with my door open, apparently ever. Wonder why soldiers feel isolated and alone? I have lived in a grouped barracks for over a year and have met maybe five people outside of my unit. … Treat young soldiers like children, they will act like children.

COMMISSARY CRITICISM
If it wasn’t for the surcharge, the commissary would be a great deal. The fact of the matter is, you are essentially paying tax on base.

I like to do my shopping after dinner on a full stomach, but our commissary closes at 7 p.m., so I don’t have time to go there. I usually end up going to Wal-Mart or Schnucks, which is just down the street. I end up spending about the same no matter which one I use.
