New Avengers attack boredom again

Marvel Comics superheroes face a particularly daunting task in their latest adventure: They must vanquish their enemies in order to get to an Air Force base in time to open a new exchange store.

One million copies of the free “Hero Exchange,” the 10th installment of the military-only New Avengers comic, are being distributed in exchanges on Army and Air Force bases, and in contingency locations.

They have arrived at locations within the continental U.S., said Army and Air Force Exchange Service spokesman Judd Anstey. They were scheduled to be in South Korea, Japan and Germany by the end of December and at 54 locations in Iraq and Afghanistan by early January.

In this outing, Captain America battles Whiplash, Thor duels with Abomination and Iron Man fights Fin Fang Foom.

Not to ruin the comic’s ending, but the new exchange — at Tinker Air Force Base, Okla. — opened successfully Sept. 17.

“We are thrilled that the exchange and Marvel continue to work together to provide these complimentary comics to authorized patrons around the world,” said the AAFES’ senior enlisted adviser, Air Force Chief Master Sgt. Jeffry Helm. “We could not have imagined when the first one came out in 2005 that they would be as popular and so well received by the military community.”

The comics are available on a first-come, first-served basis.
