Nearly 350 lieutenant colonels and promotable majors have been selected for assignment to battalion-level command and key billet positions that become vacant in fiscal 2008. Selection totals for the three boards were similar to 2007, totaling 180 for combat arms, 76 for combat support and 89 for combat service support. The boards also identified an equivalent number of officers to serve as alternates. The basic zone of consideration for the boards that met in September and October included basic-branch lieutenant colonels and promotable majors of the Operations career field who will have fewer than 23 years of service on Sept. 30. Officers were considered for command in the categories of Operations, Strategic Support, Recruiting and Training and Installation Management. Key billet assignments will go to officers qualified to serve in division-level intelligence, logistics, ordnance, quartermaster, signal and chemical staff positions. The officers will be slated for specific assignments by Human Resources Command in consultation with Gen. Peter Schoomaker, the chief of staff.
