Montana guardsmen return from border work

About 75 Montana Army National Guard soldiers are returning Friday from a three-week stint at the U.S.-Mexico border in New Mexico.

The 484th Military Police Company and 631st Chemical Company were deployed to Operation Jump Start instead of conducting their annual training in Montana, said Maj. Garth Scott, spokesman for the Montana Guard.

While there, the soldiers manned entry identification sites 24 hours a day in teams of four. In their off-shift hours, they trained in skills that normally would have been honed at annual training, Scott said.

A smaller group of Montana Guard aviators has begun a three-week rotation in New Mexico.

Security and Support Detachment, 1st Battalion, 112th Aviation Regiment, arrived Tuesday and has about half a dozen soldiers.
