Reservist advances on ‘American Idol’

A soldier who appeared in military fatigues at an American Idol audition in Minneapolis is on her way to Hollywood.
Army Reserve Spc. Rachel Jenkins impressed judges by singing “His Eye is on the Sparrow” during audition footage shown Tuesday night on American Idol and will advance to the next round. The singing competition is entering its sixth season on Fox.
Jenkins, 21, is from the Minneapolis suburb Minnetonka and married to a 4th Infantry Division soldier, Daniel.
Simon Cowell, creator of American Idol and widely known for being the show’s most critical judge, said, “You’re not one of the best singers, but I think people would like you.”
Randy Jackson said he liked the “husky, smoky tone” of Jenkins’ voice.
“I was actually surprised when you opened your mouth and started singing,” he said. “I was like ‘Wow, she might have something here.’”
