FORT MONROE, Va. — A laptop computer containing the names, Social Security numbers and payroll information for as many as 16,000 civilian employees at Fort Monroe was stolen from one of the employee’s personal vehicle, officials said Monday.

The computer was password protected, Army officials said, and did not contain bank account or bank routing information. The potentially affected employees all work at the U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command, headquartered at Fort Monroe.

Officials said the Army Criminal Investigation Command and local law enforcement were investigating, and TRADOC was looking into whether some policies need to be changed.

Lt. Gen. Thomas Metz, in a letter to each of the potentially affected employees, said the Army is committed to preventing similar incidents from occurring, and gave each of them tips on how they can guard against unauthorized use of their personal information.
