New chief of chaplains nominated
Posted : Monday May 14, 2007 6:46:43 EDT
An officer who began his career as a field artilleryman has been nominated for promotion to major general and assignment as the chief of chaplains.
If confirmed by the Senate, Brig. Gen. Douglas L. Carver, deputy chief of chaplains, will replace Maj. Gen. David H. Hicks, who has been the Army’s top chaplain since July 2003.
The position of chief of chaplains is designated in law. Officers normally serve in the post for four years, just as with other statutory positions.
Carver, who holds theology degrees from the University of Tennessee and Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, was senior chaplain for V Corps and Combined Joint Task Force 7 in Germany and Iraq during 2002-04.
Before being named deputy chief in September 2005, he was director of training at the Chaplain Center and School, Fort Jackson, S.C.
Carver was commissioned in the field artillery. As a company-grade officer, he served in various artillery jobs with 4th Infantry Division.
He subsequently left active duty and for five years served with the Army Reserve. Upon returning to active duty in 1984, he attended the Chaplain Corps officer basic course and began his career in the chaplaincy.
Among his awards and decorations are the Legion of Merit with an oak leaf cluster, Bronze Star, Parachutist Badge, Air Assault Badge and Ranger Tab.
