Aug. officer promotions slow to a trickle

Lt. colonel, major lists await approval

Fewer than 400 officers will be promoted in August, primarily because two large lists for the Army Competitive Category are pending release and Senate confirmation.

The fiscal 2007 ACC lieutenant colonel and major lists were compiled by boards that met in the spring. If released within the next few weeks, promotions could begin off the rosters in late summer. Senate review and approval normally takes several weeks.

The August promotion forecast released by the Office of the G1 in early July authorizes 397 promotions for the basic and special branches.

Advancements to colonel will total 63 for the four functional categories of the Army Competitive Category, four for the Nurse Corps, three for the Medical Service Corps and one for the Chaplain Corps.

Only four promotions to lieutenant colonel are authorized — three for the Chaplain Corps, and one for the Dental Corps.

New lists for the Judge Advocate General’s Corps and the Army Medical Department are pending release.

The August promotion plan calls for 132 advancements to major — 27 each for the Nurse Corps and Medical Service Corps; two each for the Medical Specialist Corps and Veterinary Corps, and one each for the Chaplain Corps, Medical Corps and Dental Corps.

At the rank of captain, there will be 35 advancements for the Army Competitive Category, 11 for the Nurse Corps, seven for the Medical Specialist Corps and five for the Medical Service Corps.

Promotions to the chief warrant officer grades will total 132, and will include 10 advancements to W-5, 43 to W-4 and 79 to W-3.
