7 soldiers killed in 2 days in Iraq

BAGHDAD — A soldier was killed Wednesday during combat operations in the western section of the Iraqi capital and another one died of nonbattle-related causes, the military said.

A Multi-National Division-Baghdad soldier died in an attack as U.S. troops conducted targeted raids and clearing operations in the western section of the Iraqi capital, in order to disrupt insurgent and criminal militia elements, the military statement said.

A Task Force Lightning soldier died Wednesday of nonbattle-related causes in Salahuddin province, the military said separately in a brief statement.

The statements came a day after the military reported five other soldier deaths. Three were killed Tuesday following an explosion near their patrol northeast in Diyala province.

Another Task Force Lightning soldier died Tuesday in a vehicle accident in the northern Nineveh province, the military said separately, adding that the incident was under investigation.

And a Multi-National Division-Baghdad soldier was killed in an attack Tuesday by small-arms fire while conducting combat operations in a southern section of the Iraqi capital.

The operations are part of U.S. and Iraqi push “to deny and disrupt al-Qaida terrorist cells using this area as a support zone,” the military statement said.

The statements announcing the deaths provided no more details. The soldiers’ names were not released pending notification of relatives.
