Two soldiers killed in Afghanistan

PHOENIX — An Army soldier from Glendale has been killed in combat in Afghanistan along with a comrade from Oregon.

The Defense Department said 29-year-old Spc. Hugo V. Mendoza died Thursday when his unit was attacked by enemy forces using rocket-propelled grenades, machine guns and small-arms.

Also killed in the battle was Sgt. Joshua C. Brennan, 22, of Ontario, Oregon. He died of his wounds on Friday.

The two solders were assigned to the 2nd Battalion of the 503rd Airborne Infantry Regiment based in Vicenza, Italy.
