Sergeant convicted of possessing child porn

An Army sergeant was convicted of possessing child pornography and violating a general order during a court-martial Oct. 9 in Iraq, the military announced Sunday.

Sgt. Angel D. Escobales, 38, of New Britain, Conn., was tried at Logistical Support Area Anaconda near Balad. Escobales was assigned to the 144th Military Police Company, 97th Military Police Battalion, 89th Military Police Brigade at Contingency Operating Base Speicher near Tikrit, Iraq.

In July, while at Forward Operating Base Marez, near Mosul, members of Escobales’ unit discovered child pornography on his computer. He pleaded guilty to wrongfully possessing 12 videos of child pornography on his personal laptop and wrongfully possessing adult pornography in violation of General Order No. 1. He was sentenced to 18 months in prison, a reduction in rank to E-1, and a bad conduct discharge.
