Hawaii site remains closed after bomb found
Posted : Monday Nov 12, 2007 10:06:57 EST
HONOLULU — Makua Military Reservation will remain closed for at least another month after crews discovered a 250-pound World War II-era bomb underneath an internal access road.
The Army says it will keep the area off-limits while officials continue to sweep for old munitions.
The bomb and three small munitions have been found so far.
Eventually, the bomb will have to be detonated in place because it can’t be safely removed.
A civilian access visit planned for Nov. 16-17 to coincide with the Hawaiian makahiki celebration has been canceled.
The Army says the bomb is not far from three ceremonial structures used by Native Hawaiians during the makahiki observance.
