Va. man faces 35 years for faking Army career

ROANOKE, Va. — A Roanoke man faces up to 35 years in prison after a federal jury found him guilty of fabricating a career in the Army.

Randall Moneymaker, 44, claimed he had been on active duty since the early 1980s, serving as a Ranger in places such as Grenada, Panama, Bosnia, Afghanistan and Iraq.

Prosecutors say he used his status as a wounded soldier to obtain more than $18,000 in military disability payments. He also secured a job as a recruiter for the Army’s Active Guard Reserve.

The jury convicted Moneymaker of making false statements and theft of government property.

He also faces a fine of more than $1.5 million. A sentencing date has not yet been set.
