5 years in: The Iraq war by the numbers
Posted : Thursday Mar 20, 2008 11:01:45 EDT
March 19 marked the fifth anniversary of the first U.S. salvo in the Iraq war, now the second-longest conflict in American history. Hundreds of thousands of service members and vast quantities of materiel — weapons, ammunition, personnel support and many other items — have been sent to Iraq to support the war effort over those five years. Along the way, U.S. troops have tried to lay the foundation for a better life for the Iraqi people, rebuilding schools, hospitals and basic infrastructure in the face of persistent insurgent attacks.
