A vehicle mishap in an area northwest of Baghdad called Golden Hills claimed the lives of two infantrymen from the 101st Airborne Division.

The two soldiers, 1st Lt. Timothy W. Cunningham, 26, and Pfc. John T. Bishop, 22, died Wednesday from wounds suffered when their vehicle rolled into a canal, according to a press release from the Defense Department.

Bishop’s father, John Bishop of Gaylord, Mich., said in a report published on the Traverse City Record Eagle’s Web site, that his son and Cunningham were “in a heavy armored vehicle and the side of the road gave way and the vehicle rolled over into a canal and he was trapped.”

The soldiers were assigned to 1st Squadron, 32nd Cavalry, 1st Brigade Combat Team, at Fort Campbell, Ky.

Cunningham is survived by his wife, Samantha, and daughter Abigail. Bishop is survived by his wife, Diane.

Each soldier entered the Army in 2006 and arrived at Fort Campbell the following year.
