SF retirees donate goods to Afghanistan
Posted : Wednesday Apr 16, 2008 6:06:41 EDT
Afghans at the Tarin Kowt Hospital in Oruzgan province became the beneficiaries of a truckload of supplies donated and shipped to Afghanistan by a group of retired soldiers from the National Guard’s 20th Special Forces Group.
The supplies were distributed April 6 by Special Forces soldiers on the ground in Afghanistan and their Afghan national security force counterparts, according to an Army news release.
The 20th Group soldiers, in coordination with current SF soldiers, raised $11,750 in cash, clothing and school supplies, all of which were donated mainly by U.S. citizens, the release said.
The 20th Group soldiers used the money to purchase blankets, school supplies, socks and winter clothing. Private companies also donated clothing and additional school supplies, the release said.
Afghan national police forces delivered the goods to the Tarin Kowt Hospital, explaining to the hospital’s assistant director that the supplies were gifts to the Afghan people from families and businesses in the U.S.
The hospital broadcast radio announcements to inform local village elders of the available aid.
