The U.S. Army Special Forces Command welcomed a new command sergeant major during a ceremony Friday at Fort Bragg, N.C.

Command Sgt. Maj. Mario G. Vigil, who for the past two years was command sergeant major of 5th Special Forces Group (Airborne) at Fort Campbell, Ky., assumed responsibility of USASFC from Command Sgt. Maj. Parry L. Baer, who retired.

“I’m not here solely on my accomplishments, and I understand that I’m here because of the fine soldiers I have served with over the last 26 years,” Vigil said in an Army news release. “I take very seriously my responsibility as a regimental sergeant major. I know my job is to enable to groups, our soldiers, and our detachments to be successful on the battlefield.”

After the assumption of responsibility ceremony on Meadows Field, Vigil presented his predecessor with the Saint Philip of Neri Bronze Award, with a citation that reads: “Command Sgt. Maj. Baer became the face of the seasoned Special Forces non-commissioned officer in combat, providing sound advice, an exceptional example, and solid leadership.”

Vigil began his Special Forces career in September 1985, after graduating from the Special Forces Qualification Course as a Special Forces medic.
