Guard disaster response exercise begins Monday

The National Guard will conduct a three-day disaster preparedness exercise beginning Monday in Beaufort, S.C. The exercise, called “Vigilant Guard,” is designed to test the capabilities and interoperability of local, regional and state first responders.
During the exercise, the more than 3,000 participants will have to react to a mock 7.3 earthquake in Beaufort County. They will train on search and rescue in collapsed buildings, medical triage and evacuation of patients, and the care and feeding of displaced residents. Also, a C-130 aircraft will land at the Hilton Head airport to test emergency evacuation plans.
“Vigilant Guard” is scheduled to end Thursday.
