FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — A North Carolina jury has returned a life prison sentence for a man convicted of killing a New York teenager in Fayetteville in 2005.

A Cumberland County jury decided Thursday against a death sentence for James Christopher Stitt, who was convicted of killing 16-year-old Jenna Bologna. Defense lawyer Jim Parish said Stitt was relieved.

Stitt also was convicted of killing the girl’s boyfriend, 21-year-old Army Spc. George Katsigiannis, in the home the three shared. The three knew each other growing up in Brooklyn, N.Y.

The Fayetteville Observer reported the 22-year-old Stitt was sentenced to about 16 years to 19 years for killing the soldier. The sentences will be served consecutively, along with another six to eight years for robbing Katsigiannis.
