SEATTLE — The Army Reserve has identified the soldier from a Fort Lewis unit who died in a training exercise in Alberta.

The Reserve says 25-year-old Spc. Joseph Cerfus of Marysville was fatally injured while working with a ground crew slinging an item to an airborne helicopter.

It happened Monday while a Chinook helicopter unit was training as part of the Maple Guardian Exercise at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright, Alberta. A memorial service was held Wednesday at the base.

In civilian life Cerfus worked as a custody officer for the Snohomish County Department of Corrections.

He was one of about 200 soldiers in A Company, 5-159 Aviation Regiment, based at Gray Army Airfield, Fort Lewis. A spokeswoman, Pam Garrison, says it has been training in Canada since last month.
