Soldiers from the 864th Engineer Combat Battalion are returning Sunday from a 15-month deployment to Afghanistan, according to a press release from Fort Lewis, Wash.
The unit deployed in February 2007 and commanded Task Force Pacemaker. During its tour, the task force built 93 kilometers of new roads and supervised the construction of an additional 217 kilometers of roads by Afghan contractors.
The task force also constructed more than 200 buildings, including 12 brick and mortar facilities, creating living spaces for more than 1,600 soldiers. The unit supervised or assisted in the building of eight schools, 11 wells, four solar light projects and other efforts totaling nearly $3.6 million in local civilian development.
The battalion’s C Company deployed separately and is currently serving in Iraq.
