YOKOSUKA, Japan — Brig. Gen. Francis Wiercinski became the new commander of the U.S. Army in Japan on Monday, replacing Maj. Gen. Elbert Perkins.
About 200 people, including members of the U.S. forces in Japan and officials from the Japanese Defense Ministry, as well as U.S. Ambassador to Japan Thomas Schieffer, attended the replacement ceremony at Camp Zama.
Wiercinski also presides over the headquarters of the U.S. Army 1st Corps at Camp Zama, which was launched last year to quickly deploy reinforcements in battlefields in the Asia-Pacific.
Wiercinski, who served as deputy commanding general of U.S. Army, Pacific, in Hawaii since January, has participated in operations in Afghanistan and Iraq.
