NEW ORLEANS — Although the police superintendent and mayor want the National Guard to stay in New Orleans at least through the year, plans are set to begin phasing them out of the city beginning in July.
Army Maj. Michael Kazmierzak said the Guard plans to send 50 guardsmen home in July, another 50 in August, and have all 360 out of town by Oct. 1.
National Guard troops have helped beef up the police force since Hurricane Katrina, patrolling the emptier sections of the city.
Police Superintendent Warren Riley and Mayor Ray Nagin have sent letters to the governor asking for the stay to be extended until Jan. 1.
