Posted : Monday Jun 23, 2008 5:43:43 EDT
A ceremony was held to honor Sgt. Audie Murphy on Friday at Arlington National Cemetery. Murphy was the most decorated soldier of World War II, and Friday would have been his 82nd birthday.
The Sergeant Audie Murphy Club’s Washington D.C. chapter held a 9 a.m. wreath ceremony at his grave at the cemetery, according to the club’s press release. The gravesite is in Section 46 of the cemetery.
The club is made up of noncommissioned officers who seek to recognize outstanding NCOs in the Army and encourage excellence in enlisted soldiers.
Murphy fought in North Africa, Italy, France, Sicily and Germany during World War II. He was awarded the Medal of Honor and other medals for valor and leadership. He died in 1971.
