Drum paper renamed ‘Mountaineer’

FORT DRUM, N.Y. — Fort Drum’s weekly newspaper has a new name — “The Mountaineer.”
Fort Drum officials ran a contest to pick a new name, and R.D. Murphy of the Army post’s public affairs office says readers picked “The Mountaineer” over five other finalists.
The newspaper is changing its name from “The Fort Drum Blizzard” as part of a redesign. Many readers felt the old name left the misleading impression the northern New York home of the 10th Mountain Division is always cold and snowy.
The new name will not debut on the masthead until Sept. 25, when the overhauled paper is launched.
Other contenders were The Summit, The Fort Drum Patriot, The Northern Post, The Pinnacle and The Mountain View.
