HONOLULU — Nearly 1,700 Hawaii Army National Guard soldiers in the 29th Brigade will be attempting to break the world record of the largest group hug at their deployment ceremony.
The soldiers are being deployed to Kuwait and will have a ceremony on Aug. 16 at Aloha Stadium, where more than 6,000 people are expected to enter the Guinness Book of World Records.
The current record was set in Mexico with 6,623 people.
According to the Hawaii governor’s office, 11-year-old Ashley Kakazu came up with the idea and will be the event’s organizer.
The soldiers are scheduled to leave for Fort Hood, Texas, two days after the ceremony, where they will train for two months before going to Kuwait.
