Ex-Ranger sentenced to 35 years in shooting

ROCKVILLE, Md. — A judge sentenced a former Army Ranger to 35 years in prison in the shooting death of a fellow Ranger he had served with in Afghanistan.
In sentencing 25-year-old Gary Smith, Montgomery County Circuit Court Judge Eric M. Johnson criticized the lack of programs for war veterans.
Smith was found guilty of second-degree murder in April for killing Michael McQueen, 22, with a gunshot to the head in the apartment the two shared in Gaithersburg in September 2006.
During the trial, Smith’s lawyers suggested that McQueen’s death was a suicide, and that McQueen was despondent over issues such as his job prospects and a breakup with a girlfriend. Prosecutors said Smith idolized McQueen and was upset when McQueen said he planned to move out of the apartment.
