4 soldiers face charges in detainee deaths
Posted : Tuesday Jul 22, 2008 20:00:02 EDT
Four soldiers from the 172nd Infantry Brigade in Grafenwoehr, Germany, have been charged with conspiracy to commit premeditated murder in connection with an investigation into the 2007 deaths of detainees in Iraq.
The soldiers, assigned to D Company, 1st Battalion, 2nd Infantry Regiment, 172nd Infantry Brigade, are Staff Sgt. Jess Cunningham, Sgt. Charles Quigley, Spc. Stephen Ribordy and Spc. Belmor Ramos.
The charges stem from an incident in April or May of 2007, when the soldiers were deployed to Baghdad with 1st Battalion, 18th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade, 1st Infantry Division. Details about the incident were not available.
Soldiers from 2nd Brigade, 1st Infantry Division, returned to Schweinfurt, Germany, in November after a 15-month deployment in Iraq. The brigade was later reflagged to the 172nd and moved to Grafenwoehr.
