More than 200 mourners gathered Wednesday at the Weaver Auditorium at Womack Army Medical Center, Fort Bragg, N.C., to honor a soldier allegedly killed by her Marine husband.
Remains believed to be 2nd Lt. Holley L. Wimunc, a medical surgical nurse, were found near Camp Lejeune, N.C., after Wimunc was reported missing last week and her apartment set on fire.
Cpl. John Patrick Wimunc, 23, has been charged with first-degree murder, first-degree arson and conspiracy to commit first-degree arson. Lance Cpl. Kyle Alden, 22, who served with John Wimunc in 2nd Combat Engineer Battalion, has been charged with felony accessory after the fact to first-degree murder.
The Wimuncs were going through a divorce.
At the front of the auditorium, a poster-sized photo of a smiling Wimunc sat alongside a display of boots, a rifle, a helmet and dog tags.
The crowd will filled with soldiers who worked with Wimunc at Womack, soldiers from Fort Bragg, friends from the community and Marines from Camp Lejeune.
“Losing someone close is never easy and choosing the right words to say for this memorial was very hard,” said Lt. Col. Carmen A. Stella, head nurse of the Mother Baby unit at Womack where Wimunc, 24, worked.
Stella said Wimunc worked hard to build a better life for her children, Tre, 7, and Kendall, 5.
“Her patients loved her because of her outstanding nursing skills and beautiful personality,” Stella said. “She always smiled no matter what was going on at work or at home.”
