FORT BRAGG, N.C. — Opening statements have been delayed one day in the murder trial of a New York National Guardsman charged with killing two superior officers in Iraq.

Opening statements were scheduled for Monday. But the military said Thursday they now will be held Tuesday. Monday is Columbus Day, a federal holiday.

Jury selection began this week for the trial of 41-year-old Staff Sgt. Alberto Martinez of Troy, N.Y.

Martinez is charged with premeditated murder in the 2005 deaths of 30-year-old Capt. Phillip Esposito of Suffern, N.Y., and 34-year-old 1st Lt. Louis Allen of Milford, Pa. Both were in the 42nd Infantry Division.
