Street named for GI in iconic Iraq war photo

MOUNT SINAI, N.Y. — A Long Island community has named a street after a soldier who died of an accidental overdose after struggling with post-traumatic stress disorder for almost five years.

Pipe Stave Hollow Road in Mount Sinai is now named in honor of local hero, Pfc. Joseph Dwyer. The Long Island native enlisted in the Army two days after the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks and served in Iraq. A Military Times photo of Dwyer running through a battle zone carrying an Iraqi boy became one of the iconic images of the war.

Dwyer died in June of an accidental overdose after years of treatment for his psychological disorder. Friends who helped get the street renamed for Dwyer have started an organization aimed at assisting soldiers who struggle with PTSD.
