SEATTLE — A 57-year-old Sumner man pleaded guilty in federal court in Tacoma to making false claims of military medals and decorations.

Steve A. Bennest entered the plea Wednesday after reaching an agreement with prosecutors. He could face up to a year in prison when he is sentenced March 17.

Prosecutors say Bennest falsely stated on an application for veterans benefits that he had earned a Purple Heart and Bronze Star.

While Bennest served in the Army between 1969 and 1972, he earned neither medal.

The Tacoma News Tribune reports he is a former reserve police officer for the city of Pacific.
