LONG BEACH, Calif. — Army officials say a young veteran killed with his girlfriend in Long Beach on New Year’s Day had a troubled stint in the military.
Army spokesman Lt. Col. George Wright confirmed on Monday that Sarith Em was convicted of larceny and burglary in 2006 for stealing from the barracks and vehicles of deployed soldiers while he was stationed in Fort Drum, N.Y.
Em was sentenced to 22 months of military confinement and was discharged last May.
He served a tour in Afghanistan in 2004.
The 25-year-old Em and his 24-year-old girlfriend, Vannaly Tim, were gunned down outside a New Year’s Eve party last week.
Authorities have few leads in the investigation and have asked for the public’s help.
