Troops in Germany face tougher traffic laws
Posted : Wednesday Jan 7, 2009 13:19:16 EST
Changes to German traffic laws that significantly increase penalties for speeding and driving under the influence took effect Jan. 1.
The changes apply to U.S. soldiers, Army civilians and dependents stationed in Germany, according to the office of the provost marshal, U.S. Army Europe.
Included among the changes:
The new law sets zero tolerance on alcohol for drivers who have not reached their 21st birthday.
The fine for young drivers with any alcohol in their blood system increases from $166 to $333, and their driving privileges will be revoked for 30 days for the first offense, 60 days for a second offense and 90 days for a third offense.
While the fines will not apply to offenders who are stopped on U.S. installations by military police, the license suspensions and any applicable DUI penalties will be enforced, according to USAREUR.
The penalty for cruising in the left passing lane of the autobahn (German federal highway) when the right lane is free of traffic will increase from $53 to $106, while fines for failing to stop at a red light will range from $66 to $266.
Fines for exceeding posted speed limits by 13 to 15 miles per hour will increase from $66 to $93, and continue to increase proportional to the violation.
Drivers who exceed the speed limit by 38 to 43 mph will be fined $400, while those who exceed the limit by 44 mph or more will be fined $566, and will have their driver’s license revoked for three months.
For a complete listing of the new fine schedule, access the German government Web site.
