FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — Residents living near Fort Bragg can blame the Marines Corps for thunderous booms that shake houses and rattle dishes.
The 10th Marine Regiment from Camp Lejeune has been training at the Army post since March 5 with 155mm howitzers, a 3,000-pound weapon that can fire up to 10 rounds a minute. It can be towed behind a truck or dropped by parachute from an airplane.
The sound of the cannons can be heard from two to 20 miles away, depending on the weather. The booms travel up on sunny days and out on cloudy days.
The Marines expect to end training April 8, but the Fayetteville Observer reported Friday that officials said the Marines will be back in October.
