The Army does group burials when some of the remains of soldiers who are known to have died together cannot be individually identified. Seven group burials have taken place at Arlington National Cemetery and one at Indiantown Gap, Pa., since the beginning of operations in Afghanistan and Iraq.

• Two 10th Mountain Division soldiers were abducted in an ambush May 12, 2007, southwest of Baghdad. Their remains were found July 8, 2008, near the attack site and returned to their families. Some commingled remains were buried Feb. 17, 2009, at Arlington.

• A helicopter crash in Al Taqqadum, Iraq, on Aug. 14, 2007, killed five soldiers. Their commingled remains were buried Oct. 3, 2008.

• Five 82nd Airborne Division soldiers died May 30, 2007, in the Upper Sangin Valley, Afghanistan, in a helicopter crash. Their commingled remains were buried Sept. 12, 2008.

• Three soldiers from 3rd Infantry and 1st Cavalry divisions died in Baghdad April 8, 2007, when their Bradley vehicle was attacked. Their commingled remains were buried Sept. 13, 2007.

• Five infantrymen from the Pennsylvania National Guard were killed on Sept. 28, 2005, near Ramadi, Iraq, when a bomb exploded near their Bradley vehicle, then was attacked by small-arms fire and rocket-propelled grenades. Their commingled remains were buried at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville, Pa., on Feb. 4, 2006.
