The 5th Stryker Brigade Combat Team will deploy to southern Afghanistan this summer. Here’s a look at the unit:

• Soldiers: 4,000.

• Strykers: 330-plus.

• Equipped with 1,000 sets of Land Warrior wearable command-and-control kit (8 pounds a set).

• Previous soldier deployments: 165 to Afghanistan; 1,300 to Iraq.

• Number training in Pashto: About 50.

Stryker specs

Troop capacity: Two-man crew (driver and vehicle commander) and a nine-man infantry squad. Mobile Gun System has a gunner in addition to driver and vehicle commander.

Engine: 350 horsepower.

Max road speed: Approximately 60 mph.

Range: 300 miles before refueling.

Wheels: Eight run-flat tires.

Weight: About 19 tons; approximately 21 tons with Slat Armor package.

Weapons: M2 .50-caliber machine gun or MK19 automatic grenade launcher. Anti-tank Guided Missile is armed with TOW missiles. Mortar Carrier is armed with 120mm mortar. Mobile Gun System is armed with a stabilized 105mm cannon.

Armor protection: Ceramic tiles and steel plates capable of stopping 14.5mm ammunition. Add-on Slat Armor package protects against rocket-propelled grenades.

Communications: Force XXI Battle Command, Brigade and Below, Single-Channel Ground and Airborne Radio System, Enhanced Position Location Reporting System, GPS.
