TUCSON, Ariz. — Through a series of retirements and other events, the Army has decided to leave the current base commander at Fort Huachuca where he is.
It was announced in April that Maj. Gen. John M. Custer, commanding general of Fort Huachuca and its military intelligence school, was being reassigned to a new post at Fort Belvoir, Va., outside Washington.
Tuesday, the Army said the job Custer was supposed to get will instead go to another officer, Brig. Gen. Mary A. Legere.
She was supposed to be Custer's replacement at Fort Huachuca.
Base spokeswoman Tanja Linton said Custer was "overjoyed" to learn he will be staying in southern Arizona.
