Parade honors 2,900 NJ guardsmen back from Iraq
Posted : Friday Jun 12, 2009 6:23:55 EDT
TRENTON, N.J. — New Jersey’s citizen soldiers will receive a hero’s welcome during a parade through downtown Trenton on Friday.
Last year’s mobilization of 2,900 troops to Iraq — roughly half the state’s entire guard — marked the largest deployment of New Jersey National Guardsmen to a combat zone since World War II.
No one from the state was killed.
Soldiers will march from the New Jersey War Memorial, past the Statehouse, ending at the Sovereign Bank Arena. There they’ll be greeted by elected officials, USO performers and family members.
The soldiers spent 10 months in Iraq and started returning home on Memorial Day.
