FORT JACKSON, S.C. — Fort Jackson celebrates America’s Independence Day with a military ceremony that recognizes each state and territory.
The formal event known as a “Torchlight Tattoo” on Friday night features a salute to each of the 50 states, the five territories and the District of Columbia. In the ceremony, pairs of soldiers carrying flags and torches step forward and are saluted.
Patriotic music and fireworks also are featured.
Fort Jackson officials say the ceremony is derived from European military tradition marking the time when pubs were supposed to “turn off the taps” and soldiers were expected to get back to their encampments by torch light.
