New Adjutant General takes command
Posted : Wednesday Jul 8, 2009 14:57:48 EDT
Brig. Gen. Richard P. Mustion was installed as the Army’s 64th The Adjutant General on Wednesday in a ceremony at Human Resources Command headquarters, Alexandria, Va.
Mustion, previously commander of the Soldier Support Institute, Fort Jackson, S.C., replaced Brig. Gen. Reuben D. Jones, who has been The Adjutant General since June 2006.
Jones will become commander of the Army Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation Command.
In addition to becoming TAG, Mustion assumed command of the Physical Disability Agency at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, and executive directorship of the Military Postal Service Agency in Alexandria.
The position of The Adjutant General dates to June 17, 1775, just three days after the establishment of the Army, when Congress appointed Brig. Gen. Horatio Gates to the post.
Gates, a former British Army major, was the second officer commissioned by Congress, the first being George Washington.
Maj. Gen. Sean J. Byrne, commander of the Human Resources Command, said that as the Army TAG, Mustion will oversee a diverse menu of activities directly involving the lives of soldiers and their families.
Among those duties, the TAG manages systems that deliver personnel services to units throughout the Army, promotions, evaluation reports, awards and decorations, casualty and mortuary affairs, the Wounded Warrior program, the maintenance of official personnel files, postal services and absentee voting.
