SWEETWATER, Tenn. — The family of a former Fort Campbell soldier convicted for his role in the killings of three Iraqi detainees says he will be released on parole in October.
Ray Girouard, a former staff sergeant with the 101st Airborne Division, was sentenced to 10 years in prison in 2007 for the deaths of three detainees his unit captured during a 2006 raid near Samarra, Iraq.
Joy Oakes, his sister, said Saturday that the Army parole board approved his release on Friday and he is expected to arrive home to Sweetwater in early October.
Girouard was one of four soldiers charged in the crime. He was convicted by a military jury of negligent homicide, of obstruction of justice, of conspiracy and of failure to obey a general order
