CHICAGO — The Defense Department has confirmed that a Fort Richardson soldier has died of wounds sustained in Afghanistan.
The DoD identified the soldier Monday as 20-year-old Pfc. Matthew M. Martinek of DeKalb, Illinois.
Army authorities said Martinek died Sept. 11 at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany of wounds sustained Sept. 4 in Paktika Province, Afghanistan, when his vehicle was hit by an improvised explosive device and a rocket-propelled grenade before being raked with small-arms fire.
Martinek was a member of the 1st Battalion, 501st Parachute Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 25th Division based at Fort Richardson, Alaska.
