NORFOLK, Va. — Army officials say a soldier killed when a Black Hawk helicopter crashed on a Navy ship during training was based in Georgia.
The soldier, whose name will not be released until next of kin are notified, was assigned to Hunter Army Airfield, Ga., as a part of the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment.
Three of the eight soldiers injured in the crash were also assigned to the elite aviation unit, which is headquartered at Fort Campbell, Ky. None had life-threatening injuries, officials said.
The service members were rappelling down a rope from the helicopter to the USNS Arctic about 8 p.m. Thursday off the Virginia coast, near Fort Story, when the crash happened.
The cause of the crash is being investigated.
