Huachuca soldiers charged with taking base mail
Posted : Monday Oct 5, 2009 18:53:45 EDT
TUCSON, Ariz. — Two Fort Huachuca soldiers have been indicted on charges they threw out more than 200 pieces of mail taken from the Army base’s mail room.
Prosecutors say Staff Sgt. Joanna Liberty Yanz and Private First Class Crystal Lara Wilson-Chambers were charged last week with one count each of conspiracy to commit obstruction of correspondence, and aiding and abetting obstruction of correspondence.
They both face Oct. 15 arraignments.
Sierra Vista police were contacted July 22 by witnesses who said they saw Yanz and Wilson-Chambers throwing mail into a trash container at Yanz’s off-base apartment complex.
Police found 213 pieces of mail in the trash container, 160 of which had Fort Huachuca addresses.
Police contacted U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Command, and military officials interviewed the two women, who admitted to taking the mail and throwing it out.
