The Department of Defense has identified two soldiers who were killed in a bomb attack in the Philippines that has been blamed on al-Qaida-linked militants.
Staff Sgt. Jack M. Martin III, 26, of Bethany, Okla., and Sgt. 1st Class Christopher Shaw, 37, of Markham, Ill., died Tuesday on Jolo Island.
Officials said the men were part of a military convoy carrying American troops that rolled over a bomb buried under the road.
U.S. Maj. Bradley Gordon said the soldiers were part of a task force deployed to help quell militants in the southern Philippines.
Martin and Shaw were assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 1st Special Forces Group, Fort Lewis, Wash.
