GAO rips plan to privatize West Point jobs
Posted : Tuesday Oct 20, 2009 22:07:15 EDT
WEST POINT, N.Y. — The Government Accountability Office says Defense Department plans to privatize nearly 400 public works jobs at West Point military academy would result in a waste of taxpayer dollars.
A GAO report cites flaws in the cost comparison analysis used by the department.
House and Senate defense leaders are debating whether to approve a provision in the Defense Appropriations bill co-authored by Rep. Maurice Hinchey, D-N.Y. The measure would prevent the Pentagon from moving forward with plans to privatize nearly 6,000 civilian and military jobs.
In March, the Army said it wanted Ginn Group of Peachtree City, Ga., to take over more than 300 carpentry, plumbing, grounds maintenance and some other operations at the academy.
