Colorado getting 3 National Guard centers
Posted : Tuesday Nov 3, 2009 18:07:47 EST
DENVER — Colorado plans to build National Guard readiness centers and armories in Grand Junction, Alamosa and Windsor.
Gov. Bill Ritter said Tuesday he will seek $6.4 million in state funds for the projects. The federal government would provide more than $11 million.
National Guard Capt. Elena O’Bryan says 75 percent of the final construction cost will be borne by the federal government and 25 percent by the state.
Some of the state’s share would come from the Colorado Veterans Trust Fund. Officials say state law would have to be changed to use that money.
The new centers, combined with existing ones around the state, would be used by a new 800-soldier National Guard infantry battalion.
The battalion and the training centers are part of the Army’s “Grow the Force” initiative.
